Explore UAE Green Visa requirements: the MOHRE permit, AED 360,000 freelance income threshold, AED 15,000 employee salary and family sponsorship.

Based on official UAE government guidance

This article is based on official guidance published by the UAE Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs & Port Security (ICP) and the Abu Dhabi Residents Office (ADRO), checked on 20 September 2026. Links to both government sources appear in the Official sources section below.

What is the UAE Green Visa?

The UAE Green Residence, commonly called the Green Visa, is a renewable five-year residence option that does not require a UAE sponsor. Eligible categories include skilled workers, freelancers and self-employed people, and investors or business partners. This guide focuses on the first two routes.

Green Visa requirements for freelancers and self-employed people

The Abu Dhabi Residents Office lists the following conditions for the freelance route:

  • A freelance or self-employment permit issued by the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MOHRE).
  • A bachelor's degree, specialised diploma or equivalent qualification.
  • Annual self-employment income of at least AED 360,000 during the previous two years, or proof of financial solvency throughout the residence period.

Understanding the AED 360,000 income requirement

The published threshold is annual income for the previous two years, not AED 360,000 combined across both years. It works out to AED 30,000 per month as an annual average; this calculation does not create a separate monthly salary requirement.

The Abu Dhabi Residents Office describes financial solvency as an alternative form of financial eligibility. Confirm with ICP which evidence it will accept for your circumstances before relying on that alternative. A bank balance or a newly started freelance business should not be treated as automatic approval.

Skilled workers: a different eligibility route

Under ICP's published requirements, skilled workers need all of the following:

  • A valid employment contract in the UAE.
  • An occupation within MOHRE professional classification levels 1–3.
  • At least a bachelor's degree.
  • A monthly salary of at least AED 15,000 or its equivalent.

Can Green Residence holders sponsor their families?

ICP confirms that holders may sponsor a spouse and children, subject to the applicable family-sponsorship requirements. Family applications and supporting documents still need to meet those conditions.

ICP's current overview refers to specified grace periods after residence expiry. Confirm the period applicable to your residence record directly with ICP instead of assuming that every case automatically receives six months.

Preparing for an eligibility review in Abu Dhabi

Start by identifying whether your evidence supports the employee route or the freelance route. Prepare a working file with your identity documents, qualifications and either employment records or freelance permit and financial evidence. This is a preparation checklist, not a definitive authority document list.

Ask the relevant authority to confirm the application channel, accepted financial evidence, any attestation or translation requirements and current charges before submission. At the time of review, the Abu Dhabi Residents Office states that freelance nomination requests are unavailable through its own channel; check the appropriate route with ICP.

Common questions

Does AED 15,000 per month qualify a freelancer? That salary threshold belongs to the skilled-worker route. Freelancers must meet the separate permit, qualification and financial conditions.

Does having a freelance licence guarantee Green Residence? No. The published conditions specify a MOHRE permit and additional eligibility requirements; confirm that your particular permit is accepted.

Can someone apply immediately after starting freelance work? A new business alone does not establish eligibility. Where the income-history route is unavailable, ask ICP whether your financial-solvency evidence meets its requirements.
