Understand when documents may need attestation for UAE use, how translation differs and what to confirm before beginning the process.

The intended use determines the requirement

A document needed for employment, family sponsorship, education or a business transaction may require attestation. The answer depends on the document, where it was issued and who will receive it.

Ask the receiving authority for its requirements before arranging translation or certification. This can prevent paying for an unsuitable procedure.

Documents commonly involved

These documents can arise in attestation enquiries, but they do not all follow the same route.

  • Educational certificates
  • Marriage and birth certificates
  • Police clearance certificates
  • Powers of Attorney
  • Commercial and company documents
  • Other official records required for a specific transaction

What attestation does

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs describes attestation as verification of signatures and seals. It is distinct from translating a document's content.

A translated document may still require authentication of the original. Equally, an attested document may need translation for a particular receiving office.

Check the country-of-issue process

For foreign-issued documents, confirm the required authentication sequence with the relevant authorities and UAE mission. Do not assume the process used for a certificate from one country applies to another.

MOFA's service guidance requires the original in Arabic or English, or accompanied by a legally certified translation, with the necessary prior certifications. Confirm the document's condition and route before dispatch.

Prepare the document for review

Check whether the recipient needs an original, an accepted digital document or another specified format. Ensure names and dates are correct before beginning a process that may involve several authorities.

Keep tracking details and copies of the documents sent. Resolve missing pages or inconsistent information before paying for further steps.
