Understand the scope of Abu Dhabi's civil-divorce procedure, the documents to organise and why financial and child-related issues need separate attention.

Check the applicable legal route

Abu Dhabi's Civil Family Court provides a no-fault divorce procedure for eligible applicants. It allows an application without proving misconduct as the cause of the marriage breakdown.

This article concerns that specific civil-family procedure. It should not be read as a checklist for every marriage or divorce in the UAE.

Eligibility needs individual checking

ADJD's current FAQ sets out residence, marriage-route and nationality or personal-status conditions. The FAQ refers to at least one Abu Dhabi-resident party and marriage through the Abu Dhabi Civil Family Court.

Confirm the court's jurisdiction and the appropriate procedure for your circumstances before filing. If the marriage or parties fall outside the described route, obtain advice on the available alternatives.

Organise the case documents

Prepare the identity and marriage records requested for the application, including language requirements. Keep relevant existing orders and case references together.

Check the names, dates and contact information before submission. Accurate preparation supports proper notification and reduces avoidable correction requests.

Understand what the application addresses

A divorce application should not be assumed to resolve every financial or child-related dispute. ADJD provides separate civil-family procedures for financial orders, settlements and custody matters.

Identify the outcome being sought in each area and discuss it with an appropriately licensed lawyer. Avoid signing a settlement without understanding its effect.

Follow case-management instructions

After submission, monitor official notifications and attend any required sessions. Keep the issued documents and deadlines in a single record.

Do not assume a published service target guarantees the decision date in your case. The court controls the procedure and outcome.
